Redevelopment work at nine railway stations, including Chennai Park in Tamil Nadu, is in its final stages under the Central Government’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate these upgraded stations in the coming days.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to transform more than 1,300 railway stations across the country by upgrading infrastructure and enhancing passenger facilities. In the Southern Railway zone, redevelopment work is currently underway at over 40 stations.
Railway officials said that more than 119 modernised stations have already been opened to the public across India. In the Southern Railway region, 21 redeveloped stations have been completed and dedicated to passengers, while work on the remaining stations is progressing in phases. Overall, redevelopment activities are ongoing at more than 1,150 stations nationwide.
The stations nearing completion include Chennai Park, Chinnasalem and Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, along with Thalassery, Tirur, Parappanangadi, Angamaly, Chalakudy and Nilambur in Kerala.
The redevelopment includes the installation of modern passenger amenities such as lifts, escalators, foot overbridges, additional platforms, spacious waiting halls, upgraded station entrances, multi-level parking facilities and enhanced security through CCTV surveillance.
According to officials, Chennai Park railway station is being redeveloped at an estimated cost of ₹10.68 crore. The Coonoor and Chinnasalem stations are being upgraded at costs of ₹7.62 crore and ₹2.5 crore, respectively.
The newly redeveloped stations are likely to be inaugurated between July 12 and July 17, although the official date has not yet been announced.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a key initiative of Indian Railways to develop railway stations into modern, passenger-friendly transport hubs while preserving local heritage and improving connectivity.
